Dele Alli seals return to football to link up with Premier League legend in free transfer

Dele Alli has officially completed his return to football by signing for Italian club Como 1907.

The 28-year-old had been without a club since his Everton contract expired in the summer, although he did continue to train with the Toffees.

90mins recently reported how the 37-cap England international was set to link up with Serie A side Como in a bid to get his career back on track.

And now the Italian outfit have confirmed the free transfer, with the midfielder penning a deal until 2026 - with the option of a further 12 months.

Alli's move will see him play under Cesc Fabregas, who became Como's permanent head coach in July after managing their youth sides.

The ex-Barcelona man, who won two Premier League titles and one FA Cup at Chelsea, another FA Cup with Arsenal and lifted the World Cup and two Euros titles with Spain, has the club 16th in Serie A.

And Fabregas has been full of praise over the player in his side's announcement of the transfer.

He said: "The club believes in Dele’s potential and is committed to helping him find his best form.

"His experience and leadership qualities will certainly be useful to the team.”

Alli witnessed his new side in action last month as he was spotted in the stands at their 2-0 win over Roma.

"I got to know him yesterday," Fabregas said afterwards.

"I don’t want to talk much about this, but perhaps there’s a chance that he will start training with us after Christmas.

"Let’s see. It would be to help him get in shape and nothing more. For now, we must enjoy this night."

Alli emerged as one of England's biggest prospects at MK Dons before Tottenham signed him for £5million in January 2015.

The midfielder made 269 appearances for Spurs, scoring 67 goals, and helped them reach the Champions League final in 2019.

After falling out of form, succumbing to injuries and sliding down the pecking order at White Hart Lane, he left for Everton at the beginning of 2022, but struggled to make an impact.

He then endured a difficult loan spell at Besiktas, where he was criticised by their manager.

Alli's last appearance for the Toffees came in August 2022 and he announced his emotional departure last month.

In an interview with Gary Neville in 2023, he bravely opened up on his difficult childhood, addiction to sleeping pills and mental health.

Despite his past struggles, Alli has maintained his ambitions and is eyeing a place in England's 2026 World Cup squad.

"I hope so," he told Sky Sports when asked if he wants to return to the levels he was performing at before.

"You know you can set reminders on your phone, I have a reminder at 11 o'clock every day that says, 'World Cup 2026'. That’s my aim for now.

"I think that people will be like, 'He hasn’t played in a year', but I don’t care, I know my level. The only target I have is the World Cup right now."
