'Football is unpredictable' - Gerrard leaves role as one of world's highest-paid managers

Al Ettifaq have confirmed that manager Steven Gerrard has left the club by mutual consent.

It is understood that the Liverpool legend, who has been with the club since July 2023, asked to leave for personal reasons.

Gerrard was among the world's highest-paid managers and will be walking away from a mammoth £15million-a-year contract having signed an extension last January.

The former England midfielder said: "I want to express my gratitude to the club, the players, the fans and everyone involved for the opportunity and the support during my time here, especially the president Mr Samer, CEO Mr Hamad and the head of football committee Mr Hatim.

"I express my gratitude for Mr Samer and Mr Hatim from the first day I was warmly welcomed, and I have enjoyed the chance to work in a new country with a different culture.

"So overall I have learnt a lot and it's been a positive experience personally and for my family as well.

"But football is unpredictable, and sometimes things don't go the way we want. However, I leave with great respect for the club and the country.

"I have no doubt that the work being done will bring success in the future, and I wish the team the very best for the rest of the season."

It remains unclear what the personal reasons are behind Gerrard's exit, but if he is returning to the UK before April, he faces a massive tax bill.

UK tax rules require those working abroad to remain out of the country for a full tax year to avoid a bill totalling 45 per cent of their salary.

As it stands, that would see the former Rangers manager have to shell out £10million of the £22m he's earned as Al Ettifaq manager.

The 44-year-old's assistant manager Michael Beale is also set to follow him out the door.

Beale only linked up at the club in November, nine months after he was sacked by Sunderland.

The duo first worked together at Rangers, where they led the Scottish giants to the SPFL title during an unbeaten league campaign.

Beale followed Gerrard to Aston Villa before the former took the Queen's Park Rangers job and ended up back at Ibrox as the manager.

That didn't work out and neither did the spell at Sunderland, so the pair reunited at Al Ettifaq.

Gerrard will leave after winning 19 of his 55 matches in charge, with Al Ettifaq currently sitting 12th in the Saudi Pro League.

Though it is believed this isn't necessarily the end of his relationship with Saudi Arabia as he could be open to a role in football development there.

Gerrard enjoyed a promising start to life at Al Ettifaq as they won six of his opening eight matches in charge.

However, they then went on a nine-game winless run from October to December 2023, although he then signed his contract extension.

Al Ettifaq finished sixth in the Saudi Pro League and ten points off qualification for the AFC Champions League Two group stages.

Four wins from five at the start of this season sparked hope of improvement but their form dipped once again.

Since the end of September, Gerrard oversaw just two victories from a possible 14 across all competitions.

The England icon now leaves the third club of his senior management career.

After his stint as a youth coach at Liverpool, he joined Rangers in 2018 and won the Scottish Premiership title three years later.

Gerrard then returned to the Premier League by being appointed as the head coach of Aston Villa, replacing Dean Smith.

However, he spent less than a year there and left in October 2022 after they won just two of their first 12 league matches of the season.
